Whistleblower who makes allegations against veteran singer Alan Tam may face jail term

28th November 2021 – (Hong Kong) Veteran singer Alan Tam has been involved in a scandal a few days ago. He has issued a statement through his record company that he does not rule out resorting to the law. Fortunately, the incident has not affected his work for the time being. The programs he participated in were broadcast as usual.

Last night (26th), he still appeared in the mainland variety show.

According to the Mainland law, the person who leaked the news on Weibo may face jail term. If the incident he revealed is subsequently proven to be true, then from a legal point of view, he and his girlfriend are unmarried and hence there won’t be any legal consequences.

However, if he exposed some the pictures and details without the permission of his girlfriend, it is considered illegal. Mainland lawyers pointed out that the whistleblower may face a three-year prison sentence. If the rumours are subsequently proven to be false, he may be sued for slander.

According to mainland law, anyone who uses violence or other methods to openly insult others or fabricate facts to slander others, if the circumstances are serious, the person can be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than three years, criminal detention or deprivation of political rights. All in all, whether the news revealed by the whistleblower is true or false, he may still face three years in prison.
