3rd July 2024 – (Hong Kong) The West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) is delighted to announce the launch of the highly anticipated “Jazz Signatures” concert series. This brand-new programme will showcase leading international jazz stars and emerging talents at the prestigious Grand Theatre of the Xiqu Centre, the flagship performing arts venue in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Kicking off the series is the renowned American trumpeter, Ambrose Akinmusire, and his quartet, making their Hong Kong debut on Friday, 26th July 2024. Tickets are now available for purchase through the District’s official website.

Following the success of last year’s acclaimed performance by award-winning jazz diva Stacey Kent and her trio at the Freespace Jazz Fest held at the Xiqu Centre, the WKCD is once again bringing a world-class jazz experience to audiences. The “Jazz Signatures” concert series aims to present exceptional jazz musicians from around the globe in the extraordinary Grand Theatre, offering audiences unparalleled acoustics and state-of-the-art lighting and audio production.

Ambrose Akinmusire, widely recognized as one of the most influential and innovative young trumpeters in the international jazz scene, will headline the series. In 2020, DownBeat magazine honored Akinmusire with the prestigious title of “Trumpeter of the Year.” His playing is characterized by its pure and nuanced style, with a trumpet tone that resembles the human voice. Akinmusire’s musical journey includes studying under esteemed jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Terence Blanchard. His compositions draw from diverse influences, including classical music, blues, and hip-hop, resulting in a uniquely innovative and personal jazz sound. Akinmusire has graced the stages of major jazz festivals worldwide, including Berlin, Paris, and Venice.

Accompanying Akinmusire on stage will be his longstanding quartet, featuring Sam Harris on piano, Harish Raghavan on bass, and Justin Brown on drums. The performance will showcase a selection of his work from his quartet albums, including “A Rift in Decorum: Live at the Village Vanguard” and “On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment,” as well as his unreleased compositions. Akinmusire’s album, “Owl Song,” released last year, garnered critical acclaim and secured a spot on the New York Times’ prestigious list of “Best Jazz Albums of 2023.” Jazzwise, one of the UK’s best-selling jazz magazines, also recognized it on their “Albums of the Year” list, describing it as “starkly beautiful music.” Details of the upcoming performances in the “Jazz Signatures” concert series will be unveiled in due course.

The WKCD invites jazz enthusiasts and music lovers alike to immerse themselves in this unparalleled jazz experience, celebrating the artistry of Ambrose Akinmusire and the future performances by renowned jazz musicians as part of the “Jazz Signatures” concert series.
