18th August 2026 – (London) In an era dominated by instant messaging and high-speed connections, digital nostalgia is taking a whimsical turn, with two new animal-themed messaging apps reviving the art of slow communication. The viral trend comes in the midst of renewed interest in retro technology, from dumbphones to handheld games consoles, but these platforms push the notion even further by blending 19th century delivery methods with smartphone convenience.
Leading the craze is Carrier Pidge, a recently launched iOS app developed by Noah Larrobino. The platform emulates the journey of a homing pigeon, delivering messages at calculated speeds based on the sender and recipient’s GPS distance. The result: a message from New York to London, for instance, takes more than a full day to be delivered, travelling at a virtual pace of 110 miles per hour. There’s even an element of suspense—the app randomly simulates a 0.2 per cent chance of your pigeon getting lost en route, resulting in message loss and the need to purchase a replacement pigeon. Messages are tracked in real-time on a digital map, while users build their own flock and store correspondence in an ‘aviary’. Despite its inefficiency by modern standards, Carrier Pidge’s playful retro spirit has propelled it to number 24 in the App Store’s social networking charts.
Hot on its tail is Roost Social, developed by Logan Mendelsohn and available for both iOS and Android, which debuted in May and has swiftly amassed more than 200,000 users. Roost ups the ante by enabling users to send messages via not only pigeons but also animals including bats, penguins, and snails, introducing further comic variety to the wait. While none of these animal couriers are in danger of getting ‘lost,’ messages can still take up to a month to reach their destination, evoking a sense of anticipation reminiscent of postal correspondence. A Penpal function adds an extra layer of connection, offering a playful route to forging global friendships.
Both apps lean into the ethos of slowing down the relentless pace of digital messaging, inviting users to savour a touch of suspense and rediscover the joy of anticipation once inherent in letter writing.
