Víkingur Ólafsson to enchant Hong Kong with Bach’s Goldberg variations this June

13th May 2024 – (Hong Kong) Víkingur Ólafsson, Iceland’s illustrious pianist, is set to grace Hong Kong with his presence this June. Ólafsson will perform at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre as part of the prestigious Great Music 2024 series, organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). His chosen piece for the evening will be Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Goldberg Variations, BWV 988,” a work he renders with unparalleled technical mastery and a fresh interpretative angle.

This performance is a highlight of Ólafsson’s 2023/24 “Goldberg Variations” world tour, which has already seen the pianist captivate audiences at globally renowned venues including London’s Southbank Centre, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. His upcoming recital promises to provide Hong Kong’s music enthusiasts with a similar spellbinding experience.

Ólafsson is celebrated not only for his exceptional skill at the piano but also for his innovative approach to classical music. His accolades are a testament to his standing in the musical community, with recent honours including the Opus Klassik Instrumentalist of the Year and the Confederation of Scandinavian Societies’ International Nordic Person of the Year in 2023, the Rolf Schock Prize for Music in 2022, and Gramophone’s Artist of the Year in 2019.
