Victoria Harbour to illuminate Hong Kong’s New Year’s Eve with unprecedented 12-minute fireworks spectacle


27th December 2023 – (Hong Kong)  Get ready to be enthralled by the most spectacular fireworks display in Hong Kong’s history as the Hong Kong Tourism Board presents the “Hong Kong Countdown,” a grand event that will mesmerise citizens and visitors alike on the evening of 31st December. Themed “New Year New Legend,” this year’s celebration promises to be the largest and most extensive fireworks and music extravaganza ever witnessed in the city.

For years, Victoria Harbour has been the focal point of Hong Kong’s New Year’s Eve festivities, and this year’s event is set to surpass all expectations. The 12-minute firework musical extravaganza will feature fireworks of unparalleled size and duration, setting a new standard for countdown celebrations. This remarkable display will showcase the beauty of nature and the changing seasons through an array of vibrant fireworks, coupled with captivating lighting effects and pyrotechnics launched from the rooftops of iconic buildings on Hong Kong Island.

On New Year’s Eve, as the giant countdown clock on the exterior of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre approaches midnight, Victoria Harbour will transform into a vast and enchanting stage. The “New Year New Legend” fireworks and music extravaganza will span from Central to North Point, covering an impressive distance of 1,300 meters. Lasting for a breathtaking 12 minutes, this spectacle will transport spectators through the cycle of winter, spring, summer, and autumn, symbolising renewal and the resilience of the people of Hong Kong.

The event’s design is the brainchild of Liu Lin, the director responsible for the fireworks displays at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. Inspired by the ever-changing seasons, the show aims to evoke the feelings of winter, spring, summer, and autumn, symbolizing the eternal cycle of nature. Liu remarks, “The entire design embodies the positive and resilient attitude towards life that Hong Kong people possess.”

As midnight approaches, the skies above Victoria Harbour will burst into an extraordinary display of pyrotechnic artistry. The synchronized fireworks, accompanied by a carefully curated musical composition by renowned composer Chiu Tsang-hei, will create a symphony of lights and sounds that will leave spectators in awe.

To fully enjoy this magnificent show, various vantage points along Victoria Harbour will be equipped with audio systems broadcasting the accompanying soundtrack. Families and friends can gather at suggested spots such as the Central Harbourfront area, Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai, HarbourChill in Wan Chai, and the East Coast Park Precinct in North Point on Hong Kong Island. On the Kowloon side, Tsim Sha Tsui Harbourfront area, Avenue of Stars, and the West Kowloon Cultural District are recommended vantage points.
