Undercover police arrested four taxi drivers for allegedly charging overpriced fares at LKF yesterday. 4 plain clothes police officers rode in separate taxis to Wanchai. Four of the drivers charged between HK$100 to HK$250 (The reasonable price be between HK$30 to HK$50). 4 drivers were arrested upon arriving at their locations for overcharging and failing to use the taxi meter.
They have since been out on police bail and will need to report to the police in January. The four taxis have also been seized for illegal modifications.
Hong Kong law prohibits overcharging, refusing a hire, tampering with a taxi meter, soliciting and failing to drive to a destination by the most direct practicable route.
Offenders who are convicted can face up to six months in prison and a fine of up to HK$10,000.
