U.K. to provide Ukraine with unprecedented £500 million military aid, Zelensky announces

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

23rd April 2024 – (Kyiv) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that Ukraine is poised to receive its largest military aid package to date from the United Kingdom, valued at £500 million. The announcement followed a detailed discussion with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, which Zelensky shared on his Telegram channel.

The comprehensive aid package will bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities significantly, featuring advanced Storm Shadow missiles, several types of additional missile systems, hundreds of armoured vehicles, watercraft, and ample ammunition. This strategic enhancement aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive and offensive operations amid ongoing conflicts.

During their conversation, Zelensky and Sunak also delved into broader aspects of bilateral defence cooperation, with a particular emphasis on enhancing maritime and long-range capabilities. This focus underscores a mutual commitment to reinforcing Ukraine’s strategic military positioning and its ability to respond to threats effectively.

The UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine has been substantial and unwavering since the conflict escalated in February 2022. British Parliament figures reveal that the UK has pledged nearly £12 billion in overall support to Ukraine, with £7.1 billion earmarked specifically for military assistance. This places Britain among the leading donors in the global effort to support Ukraine during its ongoing crisis.
