6th August 2024 – (London) After the deadly stabbings in Southport, northwest England, and the subsequent violent clashes between far-right protesters, police, and counter-protesters across the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the government will establish a “standing army” of specialist police officers to deal with future riots.
Starmer made the announcement on Monday following an emergency meeting with ministers and top law enforcement officials. The move comes in response to the widespread disorder that has rocked the country over the past week, with far-right protesters seen throwing projectiles, attacking officers, looting stores, and storming hotels housing asylum seekers in major cities and towns across the UK.
According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), 378 people have been arrested since the start of the unrest, with the number expected to rise as police forces continue their efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
“Violent disorder is a serious offence which often comes with a lengthy jail term,” said NPCC Chair Gavin Stephens, warning that the authorities will “ramp up criminal justice” to ensure that “sanctions are swift.”
In his announcement, Starmer emphasised the government’s determination to maintain law and order, stating that the creation of the “standing army” of specialist police officers will provide a robust and immediate response to any future outbreaks of violence.
The decision to establish this dedicated force comes amid growing concerns over the scale and intensity of the recent unrest, which has seen far-right protesters clash with both police and counter-protesters in cities and towns across the country.
