3rd June 2023 – (Hong Kong) Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill turned into a scene of terror yesterday when a 26-year-old woman was repeatedly stabbed at least 34 times by a 39-year-old man with a knife. CCTV footage shows the disturbing attack, which was witnessed by many shoppers and passersby. The victim’s 22-year-old female friend, who tried to rescue her, was also slashed in the neck and died later at the hospital. The 26-year-old victim was certified dead on the scene.
The victim, Fong Hiu-tung, was an only child and had been working in a restaurant before the incident. Those who knew her described her as kind-hearted and fond of animals and children. She had moved out of her Choi Hung Estate home to live with a friend and primarily communicated with her family through mobile phone apps. Her family is devastated by her tragic death and struggling to make sense of the senseless violence. They plan to keep her ashes at home.
The other victim, Lau Kai-hei, came from a broken family. Her parents had divorced, and she lived with her mother, stepfather, and stepsister in a unit at King Lam Estate in Tseung Kwan O. Lau had dropped out of school in Form 4 and worked as a waitress and kitchen helper in a restaurant before becoming a hairstylist in Tsim Sha Tsui. She also worked part-time as a waitress at a nearby bar. Lau and Fong met at the bar before becoming intimate friends. They were on their way to a birthday dinner when the incident occurred.
The suspect was arrested on the scene and charged with murder. He is believed to be mentally unstable and had previously received psychiatric treatment. The police have yet to determine the motive for the attack.
According to reports, Fong and Lau had become close about two months ago after meeting at a bar. They had even visited each other’s homes before and were on their way to celebrate a family member’s birthday when the attack occurred.
The families of the victims have shared their grief and memories of their loved ones. Fong’s mother is devastated by her daughter’s death and is struggling to come to terms with it. She expressed her anger towards the suspect and demanded to know why he would do something so violent. Lau’s family also expressed their shock and sadness, describing her as a kind and hardworking person.
