Two charcoal-burning suicides reported in Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long at 5pm yesterday

18th February 2024 – (Hong Kong) Law enforcement authorities were alerted to two separate cases of suspected charcoal-burning suicides that occurred yesterday at approximately 5pm. The first incident involved a 34-year-old man named Wong in a unit located at 4178 Castle Peak Road – Hung Shui Kiu in Tin Shui Wai. The second involved a 52-year-old woman named Ng in a village house along Shan Ha Rd in Yuen Long.

Upon arriving at the scene of the first incident, officers discovered Mr. Wong lying unconscious on his bed, with a tray of burnt charcoal nearby. He was immediately rushed to Tuen Mun Hospital for medical treatment. No suicide note was found at the scene.

Around the same time, authorities responded to the second incident in Yuen Long. They found Ng, the female resident, lying unconscious in a bathroom within her village house. Similar to the previous case, a tray of burnt charcoal was found nearby. Ng was promptly transported to Pok Oi Hospital for emergency care. Tragically, she was later pronounced dead. No suicide note was discovered at the scene, and the exact cause of her death is pending confirmation through a post-mortem examination.
