Truck collides with 5 vehicles before knocking down pedestrian and killing him, 5 other injuries reported (Updated: 11pm)


27th September 2022 – (Hong Kong) At about 9pm today (27th), the police received a report that a truck crashed into a minibus near No. 6 Fu Yan Street in Kwun Tong. The truck first lost control on Shui Wo Street before crashing into 2 taxis, an anti-epidemic minibus owned by Department of Health and a van. It then continued to crash into a public minibus on Fu Yan Street before ramming onto the pavement and ran over one 65-year-old pedestrian in front of Bank of China branch.

According to on-site information, the truck involved which is owned by Johnson Cleaning Services Co. Ltd just completed cleaning the ground at the garbage station on Wan Hon Street before the incident. It was reported that the accident was allegedly caused by a brake failure.

The 65-year-old man was trapped between the public minibus and a lamp post and was rescued by firemen. Sustaining serious multiple injuries, the man was rushed to United Christian Hospital in unconscious state and was certified dead at 9.50pm. Besides, the 63-year-old van driver, the 50-year-old truck driver and three public minibus female passengers, aged 53 to 66, sustained injuries and were sent to United Christian Hospital in conscious state.

The 65-year-old truck driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is being detained for enquiries.

Investigation by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Kowloon East is underway.

Police strongly condemn the irresponsible driving behaviour of the driver. It not only jeopardises the safety of other road users and threatens ones’ personal safety, but is also the actual cause of serious traffic accidents. Police do not tolerate such acts and will take resolute enforcement action.

The comatose man subsequently passed away.
