Hainanese chicken rice is one of the signature dishes served in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Hong Kong also boasts a number of popular eateries which serve delicious chicken rice, we have compiled a top five best chicken rice list based on flavour and price. However, there is a distinctive difference in term of flavour as the chicken is cooked less oily in Malaysian/Singaporean style compared to the Thai/Hong Kong cooking style. In the following list, we compile only humble eateries in Hong Kong that serve Hainanese chicken rice that costs HKD$80 and below. (All Day dining)

5. Thai Chiu Hainanese Chicken Rice  (泰潮)

Sham Shiu Po’s Thai Chiu is listed on the Michelin recommended list for 8 years in a row. The chicken here is served boneless and the portion is general. The rice was slightly overcooked and it tasted oily and soggy. Tender and soft, the boneless chicken meat was a tad oily.

The set was served with spicy & sour cucumber salad and chicken soup.

4. Nam Heong Hainanese Chicken Rice

This small eatery serves a variety of Malaysian local dishes from Bah Kut Teh to Fried noodles.  Silky white chicken is served on order. The poultry paired excellently with the rice, which boasted a good consistency and mild aroma. While the rice appeared to be less oily, it was  fragrant and made even tastier with the added aroma from the tangy chilli  dip and black soy sauce.

3. Mandarin Chicken Rice

For those of you who are from Singapore, this place is highly recommended as the flavour is very close to home. The  chicken was tender and perfectly done,  rice was fragrant and not too oily. Their roasted chicken was tasty and juicy with hints of herbs. The rice is served with 3 types of sauce i.e. Singapore style chili sauce, dark soy sauce and ginger sauce.

2. Ah Hha

We simply love the Penang (an island in Malaysia) food served here and one of their inconspicuous but surprisingly tasty dish is the Hainanese Chicken Rice.  Restaurants have popped out like mushrooms recently in Kennedy Town but this particular humble eatery is worth mentioning. The chicken rice is served in a delightful presentation with three different types of sauce : Dark Soy sauce, homemade chilli sauce and ginger sauce. The chicken and rice were cooked to perfection.

The boneless Hainanese chicken rice is served with soup, hot drink and peanuts. There’s more to this seemingly simple dish of just rice and chicken – it takes dedication, skill and precision to serve up a plate of fluffy, plump rice grains that are jam-packed with chicken essence, topped with tenderly poached, silky chicken.
