1st October 2026 – (Tokyo) Tokyo equities advanced sharply on Thursday as robust buying of heavyweight technology names sparked a powerful rally, sending the benchmark Nikkei Stock Average up 2,203.00 points, or 3.30 per cent, from the previous session to close at 68,956.72. Dealers said the swift early gains encouraged additional momentum buying through the afternoon, cementing a broad rebound following recent pressure.
The broader Topix index also finished higher, adding 23.33 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 4,131.98 after overcoming early-session weakness. Market participants pointed to brisk interest in electric appliance, precision instruments and nonferrous metal issues on the Prime Market, with improved sentiment around the technology complex filtering into related sectors and underpinning the wider advance.
Analysts noted that the rally was initially concentrated in a handful of index heavyweights but broadened as the session progressed, with the Nikkei’s rapid ascent drawing in systematic and discretionary buyers alike. The extended climb helped stabilise the Topix, which had lagged early on, and set the tone for a firm close across much of the market.
