3rd September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Three women charged over a widely shared fight at the apm shopping mall in Kwun Tong were granted bail of HK$5,000 each at Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday and ordered not to return to apm or contact prosecution witnesses before their next hearing on 5th November.
The defendants are Leung Lai-ha, 68, a retiree; Ng Ka-yuen, 34, an insurance worker; and Xu Yang, 34, unemployed and holding a mainland two-way permit. Leung and Ng are mother and daughter. All three face one count of fighting in a public place, alleged to have taken place on 26th August in the atrium of apm at Millennium City 5, 418 Kwun Tong Road. Leung faces an additional common assault charge alleging she attacked a girl surnamed Yang at the same place and time.
Police said the clash appeared to stem from two young children arguing over play facilities in the mall atrium. Viral footage online appeared to show an elderly woman pushing and slapping a girl. Officers later charged the grandmother and mother of a boy, and the mother of the five-year-old mainland girl. The three adults and the girl were taken conscious to United Christian Hospital for treatment.
When the defendants appeared in court on Thursday they stood in charge-sheet order, with Xu between the Hong Kong mother and daughter. Each was separated by about a body length and they did not speak or look at one another. On the prosecution’s application the magistrate adjourned the case to 5th November so the defence can obtain documents and discuss other ways of disposing of the matter.
Besides the cash bail, all three were barred from returning to apm and from contacting prosecution witnesses during the adjournment. Xu, as a two-way permit holder, was also forbidden to leave Hong Kong and told not to discuss the case with her daughter.
The hearing marks the first court appearance after an episode that drew heavy online criticism of adults who let a children’s quarrel escalate into violence in a public shopping centre. Further proceedings will resume in November unless the parties reach another arrangement beforehand.
