West Kowloon District traffic police launched an undercover operation codenamed ‘Firststrike’ yesterday at around 2pm to nab errant taxi drivers. Police officers disguised as customers took three taxis from Canton Road to go to the airport, TST and Hung Hom respectively.
Upon arrival, all three taxi drivers asked for taxi fares of HK$500, HK$200 and HK$140 separately. The reasonable fares should be around HK$280, HK$25 and HK$45. Police officers immediately revealed their identities and arrested all 3 taxi drivers for failing to display their Taxi IDs, overcharging and refusal to use fare meter during the journeys. Police also tolled all three taxis away for illegal modifications.
Hong Kong law prohibits overcharging, refusing a hire, tampering with a taxi meter, soliciting and failing to drive to a destination by the most direct practicable route.
Offenders who are convicted can face up to six months in prison and a fine of up to HK$10,000.
