Thick smoke pours from Shek Mun restaurant

5th September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Thick smoke billowed from a ground-floor restaurant at Kings Wing Plaza in Shek Mun this morning, blanketing the street outside MTR Shek Mun Station and sending pedestrians scrambling for cover before firefighters brought the incident under control.

Multiple callers alerted the emergency services at about 11.12am after dense smoke poured from a shop on the ground floor of the Sha Tin commercial complex. Fire crews arrived to tackle it and had the smoke extinguished in roughly 21 minutes. Ambulances stood by at the scene. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Online video circulating from the scene appeared to show a siu mei—roast meat—shop as the source, with continuous plumes of smoke surging from the premises into the open air. The haze swept half the sky and hung over the roadway opposite the railway station, forcing passers-by to hurry clear of the cloud.

Clips shared on social media captured the same sequence: thick smoke rolling out of the unit, filling the air above the pavement and wrapping the station-front street in a grey shroud until emergency crews moved in. People on the footpath could be seen turning away and walking briskly out of the worst of the drift.

Kings Wing Plaza sits beside Shek Mun Station in Sha Tin’s commercial belt, so the sudden wall of smoke quickly drew attention from anyone using the MTR exit or the adjoining roads. Fire appliances and ambulances packed the roadside for the short but intense call-out while the plume continued to pour until crews got on top of it.

With the smoke knocked down in about twenty-one minutes and no casualties listed in the early accounts, the street outside the station began to clear as the dense cover lifted. The Fire Services Department response, the suspected roast-meat shop and the station-front location were the main details confirmed in the first reports from the scene.
