7th June 2023 – (Macao) Domestic violence has been a pressing issue in recent times, and a 48-year-old male taxi driver in Macao has been arrested for assaulting his wife with a knife. The incident reportedly took place on Monday, 5th June, when the taxi driver, suspecting his mainland Chinese wife of having an affair, demanded to have sex with her. When she refused, he became violent and accused her of infidelity. He then took a knife from the kitchen and held it to her neck, threatening to kill her. The wife managed to persuade him to put down the knife, but she was left with bruises on her face. She immediately locked herself in the bathroom and called the police.

The taxi driver fled the scene but was later apprehended by local police officers on Tuesday, June 6th, at a location in the central district of Macao. He denied the allegations of assault, but the police found the knife used in the attack in his possession. The victim was taken to the hospital, where medical examination confirmed the injuries to her face. She has demanded that her husband be held accountable for his actions, and the authorities have notified the social welfare department to provide assistance.

According to the law enforcement department, the couple got married in mainland China in 2018. However, since then, the wife had been experiencing controlling and abusive behaviour from her husband. The couple had been involved in numerous arguments and physical altercations since 2019, and the husband had even physically assaulted her in the past. The wife had reported the incidents to the police, but she withdrew the complaints due to her husband being the sole breadwinner of the family.

However, the recent incident has prompted the victim to seek legal action against her husband, and the case has been referred to the prosecutor’s office for further investigation. The charges include the use of a weapon and domestic violence.
