Syndicate racks up HK$1.4m in shopping spree using credit cards applied with stolen information

16th May 2019 – (Hong Kong) Police from New Territories North District and Tuen Mun District successfully wrecked a fraudulent syndicate that stole personal information to apply for credit cards. A total amount of HK$1.4 million was racked up in shopping sprees.

Police arrested 16 suspects between 27-55 years old for conspiracy to defraud.

Personal information was obtained via letters sent to unwary victims in postboxes or personal information submitted for job applications. The syndicate would then create counterfeit identity cards and other relevant documents to apply for credit cards.

Personal information belonging to 60 people was found during the operation. One of the suspects even possessed a small quantity of illegal drugs.
