Swedish female tourist allegedly assaulted in Wanchai hotel, local 29-year-old suspect arrested next day

19th November 2023 – (Hong Kong) On Friday (17th), a 31-year-old Swedish woman claimed that she was allegedly raped by a local man in a Wan Chai district hotel in the early hours of the same day, at approximately 6.30am. Investigators from the Wan Chai district took over the case and subsequently arrested a local man, believed to be connected to the crime, on charges of rape on Saturday (18th). The suspect is currently in custody pending further investigation.

According to sources, the female victim, a Swedish tourist who works in the field of information technology, arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday (16th) with her passport. Prior to the incident, she had dinner and consumed alcohol with her ex-boyfriend in the Central and Wan Chai areas. At around 6.30am on Friday, while the victim was waiting alone in a semi-conscious state for a taxi in Wan Chai, a man approached her and engaged in conversation. Subsequently, the victim followed the man to a temporary hotel on Lockhart Road.

Approximately ten minutes later, after the man completed the check-in procedure at the hotel’s lobby, he grabbed the victim’s arm and led her into a room where she was allegedly raped. The victim left the hotel at around 8am and sought assistance from her ex-boyfriend, who accompanied her to report the incident in the Central district on the same day. Following an investigation by law enforcement officers, the identity of the male suspect was established, leading to his apprehension on Sunday (19th) in Chai Wan.
