4th October 2026 – (Hong Kong) Passengers travelling through Central yesterday reported what appeared to be traces of human faeces on part of the concourse, prompting an immediate response from station staff. The affected area was cordoned off and cleaned, with floor coverings laid to prevent tracking and commuters guided around the scene while the spill was contained. There were no reports of injury, and routine services continued as staff focused on sanitation and crowd management.
The episode follows a widely shared video from MTR Admiralty several days earlier that showed a trail of suspected faeces near an escalator, apparently spread by foot traffic before cleaners arrived. The clip, posted online on 1st October 2026 at about 2.17pm, drew a mix of exasperation and dark humour from viewers, though many also praised frontline staff for acting quickly to protect public hygiene. The original poster said he passed the busy interchange at around 1.00pm on 28th September and described the extent of the soiling as an eye‑opener, urging passengers to watch their step and cooperate with station instructions.
Under the Mass Transit Railway By‑laws, causing or permitting filth or other offensive matter within railway premises is prohibited, with offenders liable to a maximum fine of HK$5,000 and imprisonment for six months. Station staff and authorities regularly remind the public to alert personnel immediately if they encounter spills or hazards and to maintain basic hygiene etiquette when travelling, particularly during busy periods.
