3rd September 2022 – (Beijing) Veteran strikers Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez have been included in Uruguay’s preliminary 41-man squad for friendlies against Iran and Canada next month.
Head coach Diego Alonso also named newcomers Santiago Mele, Gaston Olveira, Agustin Rogel, Sebastian Caceres, Federico Pereira and Rodrigo Zalazar while recalling forward Agustin Alvarez.
The Celeste will meet Iran on September 3 and Canada four days later as they prepare for the World Cup, to be played in Qatar from 20th November to 18th December. Both friendlies will be played in Austria though the venues have not yet been confirmed.
Uruguay secured a World Cup berth by finishing third in the South American qualifying group behind Brazil and Argentina.
The two-time World Cup champions have been drawn in Group H alongside South Korea, Portugal and Ghana.
