Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 hoisted till 12pm tomorrow, No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal may be issued tomorrow

30th June 2022 – (Hong Kong) As Typhoon Chaba gradually edges closer to the coast of western Guangdong, local winds are strengthening gradually. There are strong winds offshore and on high ground. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will remain in force before noon tomorrow. The need to issue the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal thereafter depends on the development of Chaba and the changes of the local winds. The Observatory will closely monitor the movement of Chaba.

Seas are rough and there will be swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island and Tap Mun were 53 and 50 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 59 and 60 kilometres per hour respectively.

In the past few hours, Chaba continued to track north and intensify. Its associated rainbands are affecting Hong Kong. Winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. According to the present forecast track, as Chaba edges gradually closer to the coast of western Guangdong, local winds will strengthen gradually tonight. The Observatory will issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 between 10pm and midnight.

There will still be squally showers during the weekend and showers will be heavy at times. The weather will remain unsettled early to midweek next week.
