30th September 2020 – (Hong Kong) The second quarter 2020 issue of “Quarterly Supplement to Statistical Digest of the Services Sector” is published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today. . This issue of the Quarterly Supplement provides up-to-date quarterly statistics (from the first quarter of 2019 to the second quarter of 2020) for the more important statistical series on 14 major service industries/domains of Hong Kong.
Statistics from the Census and Statistics Department show that in the second quarter of this year, the business receipts index of the air transport service industry dropped further to 63.3 from 77.9 in the first quarter, a 43% drop from 111.1 in the same period last year. The number of establishments and the number of employees dropped to 1,572 and 59,800 respectively, which were down 1.75% and 3.7% from the 1,600 establishments and 62,100 in the same period last year. The number of aircraft movements in the second quarter also fell to only 30,000. The number of sorties was a drop of 71.9% from the 107,000 sorties in the second quarter of last year. The passenger traffic of civil aircraft is even more worse. There were only 12,800 passengers in the second quarter of this year, a 99% drop from 1.89 million in the same period last year. Of these, 8,200 were arrivals and 4,700 were departures.
In the catering service industry, the value of restaurant revenue in the second quarter of this year plunged by 26% to approximately HK$21.19 billion; restaurant establishments fell another 2.24% quarter-to-quarter to 16,893, a year-on-year decrease of approximately 8.5%. As for the number of employees, the industry had only 212,817 employees in the second quarter of this year, a drop of 15.4% quarter-to-quarter.
By category of restaurants, the yield value index fell across the board. The decline in bars affected by the suspension order was particularly significant, from 116 in the second quarter of last year to 62.7 in the second quarter of this year. During the period, with the exception of miscellaneous dining establishments, other Chinese restaurants, non-Chinese restaurants and fast-food restaurants still fell below the 100 level, which is a decrease from October 2014 to September 2015.
As for the retail industry, the number of retail establishments decreased by 4.5% quarter-to-quarter to 61,650. The number of employees also fell 8.5% quarter-to-quarter to 249,359.
There were 306 hotels in Hong Kong in the second quarter, an increase of 4 from the first quarter, while the number of hotels in Hong Kong was 1,500, 23 less than in the first quarter. The occupancy rate also fell to 38% and 42%.
