12th August 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory announced that Tropical Cyclone Podul is expected to enter within 800 kilometres of the city tomorrow morning. As a result, the Standby Signal No. 1 will be issued.
Podul, which intensified into a typhoon this afternoon (12th August), is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards southern Taiwan. Under its influence, hot weather is expected tomorrow across Guangdong, with a maximum temperature of 34°C in urban areas. Heat-triggered showers will develop later in the day, bringing isolated thunderstorms and swells.
The cyclone is anticipated to make landfall near eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian on Thursday (14th August), with its associated rainbands coming close to the Guangdong coastline. This will result in squally heavy showers and thunderstorms over Hong Kong on Thursday, with strong winds and swells expected.
The Observatory will assess the need to issue higher Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals tomorrow, depending on Podul’s distance from the Pearl River Estuary, its intensity, and local wind changes. Members of the public are advised to stay updated on the latest weather information. Looking ahead, the weather will remain unstable on Thursday and Friday, with heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Conditions are expected to improve over the weekend as Podul weakens and departs the region.
