21st April 2024 – (Melbourne) A serious altercation at Highpoint Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s west escalated into violence yesterday afternoon, leaving one young man severely injured and community members in shock.

The incident occurred around 2.30pm outside the Seoul Kitchen, a popular eatery within the centre. It is reported that an argument between two men turned violent when one of the individuals produced a knife and stabbed the other. Eyewitnesses described the victim staggering down the restaurant’s stairs, bleeding profusely before paramedics arrived. He was promptly taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he is currently being treated and is in a serious but stable condition.

Authorities are actively searching for the assailant, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. Despite the severity of the incident, the shopping centre continued to operate normally, with no immediate lockdown implemented. Victoria Police, speaking to the press, indicated that they do not believe there is a further threat to the public, although they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

This violent episode follows closely on the heels of another tragic event last week, where Joel Cauchi, aged 40, fatally stabbed six individuals at the Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney. The community is still reeling from the Bondi Junction massacre, which concluded only after a police officer fatally shot the attacker.

The recurrence of such violent incidents in public spaces has ignited discussions about security measures in shopping centres across Australia. Community leaders and safety experts are calling for a review and possible enhancement of security protocols to prevent future tragedies.
