Squid Game VIP actor admits to poor acting due to dubbing controversy

5th July 2025 – (Seoul) Following widespread criticism of the VIP characters in the immensely popular series “Squid Game,” one of the actors has stepped forward to address the issues surrounding the dubbed voices of the VIPs.

In the global sensation that is “Squid Game,” the VIPs represent the affluent elite who gamble on the outcomes of the deadly games. However, Season 3 took a darker turn by depicting them as active participants in the games, assuming roles as masked guards and engaging in brutal acts, including taking lives. Despite their villainous nature within the narrative, it’s the stilted and unrealistic dialogue delivery by the VIPs that has drawn significant disapproval from viewers.

Bryan Bucco, one of the actors portraying a VIP, recently took to TikTok to shed light on the controversy surrounding the VIP voices. In response to a video mocking the VIP performances, Bucco clarified that the English dialogue heard in the series is not the original actors’ voices but rather English dubs.

“It’s not my voice you’re hearing,” Bucco stated in response to the video, as reported by IGN. He went on to explain that some of the actors’ voices were noticeably altered in the dubbing process, with voice actors attempting to replicate their tones. Despite the critical reception, Bucco expressed appreciation for the effort of the voice actors, acknowledging the challenges they faced in delivering their lines authentically.

The necessity of replacing the original voices with English dubs remains a mystery to Bucco, especially in scenes where English dialogue was already present in all versions of the show. Speculating on the dubbing process, Bucco suggested that the decision to dub all lines might have been a contractual obligation. He also noted inconsistencies in the use of original voices in different language versions of the series.

While the VIP actors have faced backlash for their performances, particularly regarding dialogue delivery, the challenges they encountered in working with translated scripts and limited context have offered some insight into the complexities of cross-cultural acting.
