4th July 2025 – (Los Angeles) In the aftermath of Squid Game 3’s resounding global success, speculation abounds regarding a prospective American rendition of the acclaimed South Korean survival series. Director Hwang Dong Hyuk has recently disclosed his preference for the central character in the U.S. adaptation, suggesting Leonardo DiCaprio as a prime contender to assume the role formerly portrayed by Lee Jung Jae.
Engaging in discussions post the release of Squid Game 3, Hwang Dong Hyuk shared insights into his vision for the forthcoming American version during an interview with Vanity Fair. Alongside cast members Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, Kang Ae Sim, Im Si Wan, Park Sung Hoon, and Jo Yuri, the director partook in lighthearted banter with the host.
When prompted about his ideal ensemble for Squid Game America, Hwang Dong Hyuk playfully challenged the Squid Game 3 cast to guess his envisioned actor. While some suggested Adam Sandler, it was Im Si Wan who correctly identified Leonardo DiCaprio.
Affirming DiCaprio as his “first choice,” Hwang Dong Hyuk reflected, “Speculation surrounding him [DiCaprio] was rife—regarding the possibility of a cameo and more.”
Implying that DiCaprio’s potential inclusion aligns with viewer expectations and ongoing buzz, Hwang Dong Hyuk proposed that the esteemed actor could aptly embody Lee Jung Jae’s Song Gi Hun character in the US adaptation. Elaborating on his rationale, he remarked, “I believe he [DiCaprio] would excel in the role of a player. Recently, he has demonstrated proficiency in roles akin to Gi Hun’s.”
While reports hinting at the initiation of filming for Squid Game America in December 2025 with director David Fincher have been debunked by creator Hwang Dong Hyuk, he remains receptive to the notion of the spin-off series. Emphasising his standpoint, he stated, “If I were formally approached, I would earnestly consider the proposition.”
