Spokesperson for the PLA Eastern Theatre Command condemns U.S. for flying Navy P-8A aircraft over Taiwan Strait

25th June 2022 – (Hong Kong) A U.S. Navy P-8A multi-mission maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft flew over the Taiwan Strait on Friday (24th), and  Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the PLA Eastern Theatre Command, criticised the U.S. move as a public hype on Saturday (25th). The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said the P-8A’s flight over the Taiwan Strait was a demonstration of the U.S. “commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.”

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence pointed out that the Taiwan military is capable of grasping the whole process of developments such as military aircraft and warships around the Taiwan Strait and adapt to them. Shi Yi revealed that the PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command organised air and ground forces to monitor the US aircraft throughout its operations, and criticised the U.S’s actions for deliberately disrupting the regional situation and endangering the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. The mainland expressed firm opposition to its action. The theatre troops maintain high alert at all times and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Earlier it was reported that mainland military officers have repeatedly claimed to the U.S that the Taiwan Strait is not an international waters.
