11th June 2026 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong’s Social Welfare Department is following up after a mother and her 12‑year‑old daughter died hours apart at Lu Shan Mansion, Taikoo Shing yesterday. Shortly after the mother’s death that morning, the girl was taken to Eastern Hospital and later discharged; she returned home accompanied by her father and grandmother. She died later that evening. Police inquiries are ongoing.
Relatives of the deceased arrived at the Victoria Public Mortuary in Sai Wan this morning to complete identification formalities. Visibly grief‑stricken and silent, they stayed for more than an hour before leaving.
Sources said the woman who died had been working as a medical social worker in psychological services at a public hospital prior to the incident. After the young girl discovered her mother had fallen to her death yesterday morning, she was taken to Eastern District Hospital, where she was seen by the hospital’s clinical psychology team.
The woman’s supervisor, a registered clinical psychologist, also went to Eastern District Hospital following the incident to meet the girl. In addition, officers from the Social Welfare Department attended the hospital to make contact with her and provide support.
A dispute over schooling preceded the first incident. After the mother’s death, police notified social services to monitor the child’s welfare. The father then accompanied his daughter back to the family flat, where relatives remained with her before the second tragedy unfolded.
Experts emphasise the need for rapid, wraparound support for bereaved families. Paul Yip Siu‑fai, Director of the HKJC Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention at the University of Hong Kong, noted that the suicide risk for those who have lost close relatives or friends rises sharply. He urged families and communities to watch for warning signs, offer emotional support and seek professional help early. Depending on assessed need, social workers can provide swift, case‑by‑case home visits akin to psychological first aid.
