10th December 2023 – (New York) X owner Elon Musk revealed that the social media platform would reinstate the account of U.S. conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The decision came after a poll conducted among the site’s users indicated strong support for Jones’ return. Musk responded to the poll on Saturday, stating, “The people have spoken and so it shall be.” The poll garnered nearly 2 million votes, with approximately 70% in favor of reinstating Jones’ account.
At the time of writing, Reuters was unable to verify if the account had been restored as of early Sunday.
Since Musk’s acquisition of the platform, several previously suspended accounts, including that of former U.S. President Donald Trump, have been reinstated.
Jones and his website Infowars were permanently banned from the platform formerly known as Twitter in 2018. The ban was implemented due to violations of the platform’s behaviour policies. This action followed similar measures taken by Apple, Alphabet’s YouTube, and Facebook, which removed Jones’ podcasts and channels, citing community standards.
Alex Jones, known for promoting conspiracy theories, including those related to the Sandy Hook school shooting, was ordered last year to pay nearly $1.5 billion in damages to the victims’ relatives. The court ruled that Jones had falsely claimed the victims were actors involved in a government plot to seize firearms from Americans.
