20th November 2019 – (Hong Kong) The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) (“SPCA (HK)” or “the Society”) and Whiskers N Paws (“WNP”), the leading one-stop pet shop and animal welfare community are delighted to announce the launch of a dedicated small animals adoption space in-store at WNP’s Ap Lei Chau location. Since 2008, Whiskers N Paws has successfully helped home over 3,000 cats and dogs.

The SPCA (HK) has been promoting companion animal adoption in Hong Kong for decades. Last year, the Society has successfully homed over 2,600 animals through its comprehensive adoption programme at its four homing centres. As a creative solution to providing expanded adoption opportunities for small animals and promoting humane education in Hong Kong, the Society broadens the scope of adoption through a partnership that allows existing and potential pet owners to adopt small animals outside of the SPCA (HK) centres.

The small animals adoption space at WNP will offer a one-stop experience for families, couples or individuals to adopt small animals. All small animals from the SPCA receive proper veterinary care and treatments before living at the on-site adoption space at Whiskers N Paws. To spread greater awareness of the message “Adopt Don’t Shop” and to teach people how to take care of small animals, additional multimedia information provided by the SPCA (HK) will share with people the benefits of adoption as well as tips on the keeping of small animals.

Ms. Alice Choi, the SPCA (HK) Executive Director says, “As we are heading towards our centenary, the Society will continue to further our mission in cultivating a deep respect for life in the community so that all living creatures may live together in harmony. The launch of the small animals adoption space will be a step forward in fostering the development of our adoption service.”

“We are proud supporters of adoption and are in a unique position to offer animals homes by making adoption more easily accessible,”says Vada Chung, Founder of Whiskers N Paws. “By partnering with multiple local animal welfare organisations, we provide a new way for pet parents and carers to experie nce animal care and bonding.”

As more households are welcoming companion animals into their homes, small animals are a great start for people to learn about responsible pet ownership as they are relatively low-maintenance compared to their canine and feline counterparts. Considering the limited small animal adoption outlets in Hong Kong, the Society’s partnership with WNP will open a new door of opportunities for a wider spectrum of people to support adoption.

The new small animals adoption space will be officially opened on Wednesday 20 November at Horizons Plaza, Ap Lei Chau. Located under one roof, this in-store adoption service will deliver greater convenience to adopters as efforts are maximised through regular adoption events. Otherwise known as ‘pocket pets’, small animals are the beginning of learning about pet ownership and play a crucial role in cultivating a sense of responsibility and livelihood in humans.

About The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HK)

Founded in 1921, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) is the region’s longest standing and Hong Kong’s largest independent animal welfare charity. Our organisation’s mission is to promote kindness to animals, to protect their health and welfare and to prevent cruelty to animals. We also endeavor to cultivate a deep respect for life in the community through humane education, as we believe this will benefit personal growth and the development of our society.

99% of our funding comes from the generosity of the general public, as well as income generated by our veterinary and memberships departments. In spite of limited resources, we continue to launch new initiatives to enhance animal welfare, including finding forever homes for homeless animals and promoting animal birth control through various programmes that allow owned, loosely-owned, and stray animals to be desexed at an affordable price or even for free. In addition, the SPCA (HK) also operates seven animal clinics, an animal welfare vehicle and a mobile clinic with several of them equipped with surgical facilities to provide care for companion animals throughout Hong Kong.

SPCA (HK) will soon enter its centennial anniversary. We are building a new education and welfare centre in Tsing Yi to diversify our services and we need your continued support to enable us to carry on the hard work of promoting and providing animal welfare services as well as turning Hong Kong into a caring and inclusive community.
