28th May 2023 – (Moscow) The Shebekino district in Russia’s Belgorod region was shelled by the Ukrainian armed forces on Saturday, leaving one person dead and three others injured. According to the governor of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, the victim was a security guard at an operating enterprise in the town who was outdoors at the time of the attack. The injured include two teenagers and an adult.

The shelling caused significant damage to two major enterprises, with several shells landing on their premises. The attack also resulted in a fire at one of the enterprises and damage to a power transmission line. Emergency services are currently inspecting the area.

The Belgorod region, which is located next to Ukraine’s Kharkov region, has seen an increase in hostilities in recent weeks. On Tuesday, Gladkov reported several drone attacks that caused damage to local private residential buildings.

The shelling is a worrying development in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The two countries have been engaged in a long-standing dispute over the region of Crimea, which culminated in Russia’s annexation of the territory in 2014. The conflict has since escalated, with both sides accusing each other of aggression and violations of international law.

The situation in the region remains tense, and the international community has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The United Nations has urged both sides to engage in dialogue and to respect the territorial integrity of each other’s countries. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has also been involved in efforts to resolve the conflict and has called for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the region.

The shelling in the Belgorod region is a tragic reminder of the human toll of the conflict. Innocent civilians, including children and teenagers, have been caught in the crossfire, and their lives have been forever changed by the violence. It is crucial that both sides work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict and that the international community continues to support efforts to end the violence.
