Secretary for Environment and Ecology addresses decarbonisation strategies in keynote speech at Dubai reception

6th December 2023 – (Dubai) Tse Chin-wan, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, made a significant appearance at a reception held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, yesterday. The event, organized by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and the Hong Kong Climate Change Forum, provided a platform for Mr. Tse to deliver a keynote speech on Hong Kong’s decarbonization strategies and progress.

Following the reception, Mr. Tse engaged in discussions with the delegation from HKIE, as well as professionals and young engineers attending the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). Notably, the reception also facilitated a video conferencing session, enabling approximately one hundred engineers in Hong Kong to join in the conversation with Mr. Tse.

During his speech at the reception, Mr. Tse emphasized the pivotal role of innovative ideas and technical expertise from young engineers in combatting climate change and achieving sustainable development. He also addressed the participants on the green business opportunities that arise from decarbonization efforts and acknowledged the challenges faced by professionals in the field. Encouraging their continued contribution, he urged them to play an essential role in building a sustainable future.

In the morning, Mr. Tse, accompanied by Ms. Salina Yan, the Permanent Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury (Financial Services), visited a project under i2Cool, a Hong Kong company, at the Dubai Mall. The project showcased the effectiveness of iPaint, a product developed by the company, in reducing both surface and indoor temperatures. This innovative solution contributes to energy consumption reduction in buildings.

In the afternoon, Mr. Tse and Ms. Yan explored the exhibition booths of park companies from the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation at COP28. Notably, they were briefed by exhibitors from companies such as M Concept Studio and Neuron Digital on various green technologies.

Concluding his visit, Mr. Tse is scheduled to attend the COP28 China Corner’s Side Event on 6th December (Dubai time). The event will mark the conclusion of his visit, which has served as an opportunity to exchange ideas and explore collaborative efforts in combating climate change.
