2nd September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Tropical storm Saudel is forecast to remain nearly stationary over the northeastern section of the South China Sea, staying at least three hundred kilometres from Hong Kong through tonight and into tomorrow morning. The combined influence of Saudel and the northeast monsoon is producing periods of strong winds, particularly on higher ground. As a result, the Hong Kong Observatory expects the Standby Signal, No. 1 to remain in force for the remainder of today until tomorrow morning.
According to the latest projections, Saudel is set to slowly turn westward on 3rd September, passing along the coast of eastern Guangdong and drawing closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary by Friday, 4th September. Forecasters note there is considerable uncertainty regarding the system’s intensity during that period. The Observatory is closely tracking Saudel’s movements and will assess whether issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is necessary should the storm approach the Pearl River Estuary. The public is advised to stay informed by following the latest weather bulletins from the Observatory.
For tonight and tomorrow, the weather is expected to remain mainly cloudy with one or two showers, and some sunny intervals are likely during daylight hours. Temperatures are forecast to range between twenty-six and thirty-one degrees Celsius, with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds that may become strong over elevated areas. Swells are also anticipated. Looking further ahead, conditions will stay breezy with swells on Friday. The weekend and the early part of next week are expected to bring sunny intervals, accompanied by the possibility of isolated showers.
