27th September 2022 – (Hong Kong) Under the new entry quarantine measures, employers neither need to book a quarantine hotel for foreign domestic helpers when they come to Hong Kong, nor do they need to undergo nucleic acid testing before boarding the plane. Employers can save about HK$3,000 to HK$3,500 in hotel accommodation and virus testing costs.
Hong Kong Union of Employment Agencies’ chairman Chan Tung-fung pointed out that after the “0+3” measure was implemented, the shortage of foreign domestic helpers is expected to ease further. It is estimated that it will take 2 to 2.5 months to hire foreign domestic helpers. Chan said that the salary level of foreign domestic helpers has dropped from HK$6,000 – HK$6,500 in April to around HK$5,000 – HK$5,300. He estimates that about 30-40% of employers will still arrange for foreign domestic helpers to stay in hotels or guesthouses for medical monitoring for the first three days after arriving in Hong Kong, reminding employers that they must pay their wages as usual.
Chan said earlier that many foreign domestic helpers have not returned to their hometowns for 2 to 3 years due to the COVID-19 epidemic. It is estimated that under the new arrangement, some foreign domestic helpers will leave Hong Kong on vacation, and it is believed that some of them will return to their hometowns to visit relatives for about a month.
