29th September 2022 – (Hong Kong) The National Day is approaching this weekend. It is reported that the police will deploy 7,000 to 8,000 officers to ensure the safe and smooth implementation of the National Day activities. In the past year, the police have purchased three additional types vehicles from the Mainland namely 6 units of “Saber-Toothed Tiger” armoured vehicles, small “crowd management special purpose vehicles” (commonly known as “water cannon trucks”) and large tactical buses.
Officers from the three tactical units of the police force, the Airport Security Unit, the Counter-Terrorism Department and the Railway Response Team have also put on new uniforms to enhance their defence capabilities. The police also launched the “Counter-terrorism Reporting Hotline 63-666-999” in June this year, with a “bounty” function to encourage the public to report any suspicious acts of terrorism. As of 19th September, the hotline has received more than 6,300 message.
‘Saber-toothed tiger’ is a Chinese police special explosion-proof armoured vehicles. It is of 6.7 meters car length, 2.36 meters wide and three meters high. It has a V10 engine and can reach a top speed of 130 km/h. The rear flat tires can continue to travel 80 kilometres even after a puncture has occurred.
The vehicle adopts a military bulletproof design and can also defend against AK74 and M16 rifle attacks. At the same time, it is equipped with tear gas cannons, sonic dispersers, etc., as well as an all-round infrared camera system. The vehicle costs between 1.6 million and 1.8 million RMB each. The vehicles will be officially put into use from June this year.
