FOOD REVIEW : El Macho, a hidden Mexican eatery in Sai Ying Pun that serves delightful bites from Tacos to Burritos

22nd October 2019 – (Hong Kong) El Macho, a Mexican eatery hidden at the corner of Third Street in Sai Ying Pun has been open since February in 2018 by Christopher Przemyski, the owner and founder of Bistro Concept Group of restaurants who also manages the Flying Pig Bistro, Flying Pig Deli.

The simple menu features the standard Mexican offerings such as Quesadilla, Burritos, Tacos and Fajitas. The restaurant is an open-concept where diners sit around the bar and a partly covered kitchen. Walls are adorned with colourful Mexican sombreros and vibrant murals. We love the exterior of the side building as it definitely added some colours to the otherwise dull neighbourhood.

We were surprised that the eatery was doing pretty well yesterday evening as it was a Monday night. Most tables were full and diners were sipping their Margaritas away while enjoying their meals.

To start, we ordered a Watermelon and a Mango Margarita and the drinks were surprisingly refreshing. They augured well with the spicy Mexican food we were about to have. To satisfy our cravings for Mexican food which we never had in a while, we ordered a full Miss Veggie Quesadillas (HK$138), Cracking Chicken Burrito (HK$88) and Fajitas with Iberico Tenderloin (HK$138). For entree, we also had the spicy Mexican wings (HK$78).

The chicken wings were flavourful and not too spicy. Meat was particularly juicy and tender. Miss Veggie Quesadillas and the Burrito were delectable. Compared to other Mexican eateries in town and much to our surprise, both were almost perfect. The fillings in the Quesadillas i.e. Jalapeno, red onion, cheddar cheese, spinach and mixed bell peppers went well with the Avocado dip or sour cream dip served alongside the dish. The halved Burrito was also generous in its fillings and it was succulent after we took a bite.

However, the dish that did not live to our expectation was the Fajitas with Iberico Tenderloin, it was too greasy and the Iberico Tenderloin was not so tender after all. The tortillas were a little bit dry and hard.

Overall, our experience at El Macho was satisfactory and we strongly recommend Mexican food fans to give it a try as there are not many good ones around. Most Mexicans eateries in Hong Kong are below par especially those operated via a chain concept.
