3rd September 2026 – (Hong Kong) The Court of Appeal today trimmed the prison term of Cheung Ho‑yeung, a member of the group Returning Valiant, allowing his appeal and reducing his sentence by eight months to five years and four months. Cheung, who was 23 at sentencing, had earlier admitted one count of conspiracy to cause an explosion likely to endanger life or property, covering the period from 1st April to 5th July 2021. He was originally jailed for six years after the trial judge found his culpability higher given his age and university status, before crediting his guilty plea.
The case stems from a plot to use explosives to damage government facilities. Eight people were arrested and charged; one later had proceedings discontinued, while the remaining seven received outcomes ranging from detention in a training centre to prison terms between two and a half years and six years. Cheung’s appeal, heard today at the High Court, resulted in the revised term of five years and four months.
