Red Rainstorm Warning Signal issued at 2.50pm, schools implement safety measures

21st May 2024 – (Hong Kong) A red rainstorm warning has been issued for Hong Kong as heavy rain and thunderstorms continue to impact the region. The Hong Kong Observatory raised the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal at 2.50pm this afternoon.

A trough of low pressure is bringing widespread heavy showers and thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong province. An easterly airstream is also affecting the eastern Guangdong coastline.

The weather forecast for the rest of this afternoon and tonight is for cloudy skies with frequent showers and thunderstorms. The showers will be heavy initially. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the east to southeast.

Since the red rainstorm warning is now in effect, schools have been instructed to implement contingency measures to ensure student safety. Schools currently in session have been told to continue operating until the normal end of the school day. Schools should only allow students to return home once conditions are deemed safe.

The focus is on the red rainstorm warning issued by the Hong Kong Observatory and the impacts and precautions being taken at local schools as a result.
