Rainfall exceeds 70mm over northern and eastern parts of the New Territories, showers and thunderstorms to continue


12th May 2022 – (Hong Kong) According to Hong Kong Observatory, thunderstorm Warning was issued at 11pm on 10th May 2022 has been extended until 11.30am today. A few squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

An active trough of low pressure is bringing unsettled weather to the coast of Guangdong. Locally, more than 30 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places this morning, and rainfall even exceeded 70 millimetres over northern and eastern parts of the New Territories.

The Observatory issued an amber rainstorm warning at 5.25am this morning, which was cancelled at 6.40am. In addition, the Observatory issued a special report on flooding in the northern New Territories at 3.07am and 3.11am this morning, stating that the northern New Territories, especially Yuen Long, San Tin and Ngau Tam Mei, were affected by heavy rain. The special report on flooding was subsequently cancelled at 6.40am.

Occasional heavy showers and squally thunderstorms will be expected tomorrow. The weather will remain unsettled over the weekend. Temperatures will fall slightly to below 20 degrees early next week.
