Quarantine period for confirmed cases and close contacts shortened to 5 days starting tomorrow, latest daily COVID-19 cases reach 14,373, a new high in recent months

8th December 2022 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong government held a press conference at 4pm this afternoon (8th) to explain the latest situation of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Under Secretary for Health, Dr Libby Lee Hayun said that the epidemic situation in Hong Kong continues to rise, and there is no downward trend. The authorities will maintain the current social distance measures from the 15th to the 28th of this month, but will find room for normalisation and then relax when the situation permits.

In addition, starting from tomorrow (9th), the isolation and quarantine period for confirmed cases and close contacts who have received two shots will be shortened to 5 days while the Rapid Antigen Test will still need to be carried out until the 5th day for overseas arrivals. Citizens can also make appointment for the third dose of the bivalent vaccine starting tomorrow. Citizens can also make appointments to receive the fifth vaccination short starting on 16th December.

Meanwhile, Dr. Albert Au, Principal Medical & Health Officer of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong has increased in the past week, including imported and local cases; the average daily local infection cases have exceeded 10,000, an increase of about 26% from the previous week. He added that the variant BA.5 is the mainstream.The number of confirmed cases yesterday also reached 14,373, setting a new high in recent months. The Hospital Authority also stated that the number of hospital admissions due to confirmed cases increased in the past week, and public hospitals are under severe pressure.
