Public bondage role-play incident in China sparks outrage, leads to couple’s detention

1st December 2023 – (Zhengzhou) A young couple in China have been detained by the police following an incident of public bondage role-play that went viral on social media.

The incident took place on Die Lake Bridge in Zhengzhou, Henan province, central China, on the evening of 18th November. The video showed a man, donned in a dog headgear, crawling on the ground, led by a woman wielding a whip.

The couple, identified by the surnames Sun, 23, and Yu, 20, are believed to have recently met online. According to Beijing News, police stated that the couple orchestrated the stunt to generate public excitement.

The man crawled on the ground for several minutes, traversing the length of the bridge before he and the woman left the scene in a vehicle, the onlooker added.

The video quickly gained traction online, amassing 150 million views on Weibo and 9 million views on Douyin.

Police officials condemned the act, describing its effect on the public as “vicious” and detained the couple on charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.”

Their public display of bondage role-play sparked a wave of criticism on mainland social media, with many condemning it as shocking and violating moral standards.
