Probe launched into severe turbulence incident on Singapore Airlines flight

23rd May 2024 – (Bangkok) A terrifying episode unfolded mid-air as a Singapore Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence, resulting in a drastic altitude drop of 6,000 feet within minutes. The incident, which saw the Boeing 777 carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members plummet during its journey from London to Singapore, forced an emergency diversion to Bangkok.

Passengers recounted moments of sheer panic as the aircraft shook violently, with personal belongings and loose items becoming hazardous projectiles. Josh Silverstone, a 24-year-old British passenger, described his ordeal of sustaining injuries and severe nausea after the flight. Despite the chaos, Silverstone managed to send a heartfelt message to his family amidst the fear.

The aftermath of the turbulence left 20 passengers, including nationals from the U.K., Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and the Philippines, in intensive care. Tragically, the incident claimed the life of a British passenger, suspected to have suffered a heart attack during the turbulence.

Aviation experts and investigators from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board have since arrived in Bangkok to probe the cause of this severe incident. Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong confirmed that while some passengers continued their journey to Singapore, others remained hospitalised in Bangkok.
