Power outages caused by fire affect 500,000 residents, no power supply to impact around 20,000 households in 4 housing estates for 2 more days


22nd June 2022 – (Hong Kong) CLP’s power transmission bridge in Yuen Long exploded and caught fire at 7.11pm yesterday. As a result, power outages in Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai and Tuen Mun affected more than 500,000 residents. The authorities received around 88 reports of residents trapped in elevators.

Housing estates, shopping malls and streets were engulfed in complete darkness. During the power outage, the train service of the MTR Tuen Ma Line was temporarily disrupted.

At the same time, due to the unstable power supply to the hospitals, some emergency patients under the New Territories West Hospital Cluster had to be transferred. In the incident, CLP said that the homes of about 160,000 residents were affected. 2 hours later, the power supply to the homes of around 140,000 residents in 3 districts were restored.

As of early morning of today (22nd), power supplies to 4 housing estates, including Tin Ching Estate, Tin Fu Court,Tin Yuet Estate and Tin Chak Estate have still not been restored, affecting nearly 20,000 households. CLP announced that it is expected to take 2 working days to repair. CLP apologised for the incident and said that it will thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident. It also promised to repair the damaged facilities as soon as possible.
