Portugal secures late win over Czech Republic in Euro 2024 group stage opener

Czech Republic in Euro 2024

19th June 2024 – (Dublin) During the opening match of Group F at Euro 2024, Portugal emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic, thanks to a late goal by substitute Francisco Conceicao and an own goal that helped them overcome an early deficit.

As Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to feature in six European Championships, Portugal dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. However, it was the Czech Republic who stunned their opponents by taking the lead in the 62nd minute. Lukas Provod unleashed a sensational strike into the far corner, leaving the Portuguese goalkeeper helpless.

Undeterred, Portugal fought back and equalised just seven minutes later. Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek parried a header from Nuno Mendes, but the ball deflected off the leg of Robin Hranac and ended up in the defender’s own net. The score was level, setting up a tense finale.

In the dying moments of the game, Portugal seized the opportunity to secure all three points. A defensive error by Hranac allowed Francisco Conceicao to tap in from close range, giving Portugal the decisive goal and sealing a hard-fought victory.
