Police smash two illegal mahjong parlours in Sheung Shui and Tuen Mun, 16 arrested

28th January 2023 – (Hong Kong) After an in-depth investigation, police officers raided a unit on Tsun Fu Street in Sheung Shui yesterday afternoon (27th) and smashed an illegal mahjong parlour. During the operation, officers arrested a 62-year-old female person in charge in the unit, suspected of “operating a gambling establishment”. In addition, 2 local men and 5 local women aged between 48 and 74, were arrested on suspicion of “gambling in a gambling establishment”. During the operation, the police seized 2 electric mahjong tables, 4 sets of mahjong, a batch of furniture and about HK$4,700 in cash. The 62-year-old female person in charge has been charged with one count of “operating a gambling establishment” and one count of “gambling in a gambling establishment”, while two other local men and five local women have also been each charged with one count of gambling in a gambling establishment. The case will appear in Fanling Magistrates’ Courts on 24th February.

Meanwhile, during yesterday afternoon, police also raided a suspected illegal mahjong parlour in a building on Shek Pai Tau Road in Tuen Mun. During the operation, a 53-year-old woman in charge surnamed Lam was arrested on suspicion of “operating a gambling establishment” and “gambling in a gambling establishment”. In addition, a local man and 6 local women, aged between 60 and 69, were arrested on suspicion of “gambling in a gambling establishment” in the unit. Officers also seized 2 electric mahjong tables, 4 sets of mahjong and chips worth about HK$20,000. All those arrested were detained for investigation.
