1st September 2026 – (New York) A knife‑wielding woman was shot by police in Times Square on Monday afternoon after two people were stabbed near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. Officers confronted the suspect at about 4.30pm and opened fire when she advanced while still holding at least one knife. Streets around the junction were sealed off as emergency crews treated the wounded and secured the scene.
Both stabbing victims were taken to hospital. Subsequent updates from law‑enforcement sources indicated that one of the victims, a woman, later died, as did the suspect. The condition of the second victim had not been confirmed at the time of writing. Investigators are analysing bystander footage and CCTV to determine the sequence of events, and early indications are that the incident is not being treated as terrorism. Authorities also said they are looking into the suspect’s mental health history.
