15th January 2020 – (Hong Kong) It is understood that the Hong Kong police are studying to increase the equipment options of police officers on duty, and it is nearing the completion stage. Police officers may be armed with Taser guns soon. Emergency Unit police officers will first be given priority before other departments are allocated the same weapon. Extendable batons were given to off-duty police officers last year.

The Taser was introduced as a less-lethal force option for police to use to subdue fleeing, belligerent, or potentially dangerous people, who would have otherwise been subjected to more lethal force options such as firearms. They are commonly used by police in U.K., U.S, Australia and Singapore. Tasers have a greater deployment range than batonspepper spray or empty hand techniques. This allows police to maintain a greater distance.
