Police arrest 19 in 2 gambling dens in Sheung Shui and and Tsz Wan Shan

22nd March 2023 – (Hong Kong) Police officers in Hong Kong conducted two separate raids on illegal gambling dens on the night of 21st March, resulting in the arrest of multiple individuals and the seizure of gambling equipment and cash.

In the first raid, officials targeted a unit on San Tsoi Street in Sheung Shui and uncovered an illegal mahjong gambling den. Two electric mahjong tables, four sets of gambling equipment, furniture, and approximately HK$13,000 in cash were seized. The 40-year-old male in charge of the unit was arrested on suspicion of “operating a gambling establishment”. Additionally, 3 local men, 8 local women, and 2 mainland Chinese women between the ages of 40 and 64 were also arrested on suspicion of “gambling in a gambling establishment”. The male in charge of the unit is currently being held on temporary charges, and the other individuals are also facing temporary charges. The case will be heard at the Fanling Magistrates’ Courts in late April.

In a separate anti-gambling operation that same night, law enforcement officials raided a unit on Shung Wah Street in Tsz Wan Shan and dismantled another mahjong gambling den. Three mahjong tables, approximately HK$3,000 in gambling money, and gambling equipment were seized. The 48-year-old female host of the unit, surnamed Mao, was arrested on suspicion of “operating a gambling establishment”. Two men and two women between the ages of 42 and 64 were also arrested on suspicion of “gambling in a gambling establishment”. All four individuals were granted bail and required to report to authorities in mid-April.
