Police arrest 17 in connection with 3 explosions, 3 homemade bombs and 2.6 tons of chemicals seized

8th March 2020 – (Hong Kong) Senior Superintendent Steve Li Kwai Wah from Organized Crime & Triad Bureau expressed in a media interview today that police have been investigating 3 separate cases of explosives at Caritas Medical Centre (27th January), Shenzhen Bay Port (28th January 2020) and Lo Wu Station (2nd February). After gathering sufficient evidence, police finally arrested 12 men and 5 women aged 21-53 years from 22 units in Kowloon and New Territories in an operation yesterday. All of them were connected to the same group.

Police searched 3 commercial units on Bedford Road in Tai Kok Tsui and found 3 homemade bombs weighing 1.5kg in one of the units. Police also found 2.6 tons of chemicals, including nitrate mixtures, sulfur, magnesium powder and sodium, believed to be used in the making of homemade explosives, and another 6 bottles of drain cleaner and 60 electronic matches. Li pointed out that the semi-manufactured explosives are quite unstable and may explode when exposed to heat or fire, which has a great impact on the safety of the building. He criticized the perpetrators for blatantly ignoring public safety and acting extremely irresponsibly.
